Florida Southern College, often abbreviated as Florida Southern or FSC, is a four year, private, liberal arts and united methodist affiliated college located in Lakeland, Florida, USA.
Florida Southern College was founded in 1883 in Orlando as Southern Florida Institute, then it was moved to Leesburg in 1885. The institution was organized as co-educational in 1885. In 1901, The Institute was transffered to Sutherland, now known as Palm Harbor, and in 1906, it got a new name: Southern College. The college was temporarily relocated to Clearwater, then was moved to the shores of Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, the final destination, and in 1935, it changed its name to the current Florida Southern College.
The college provides a unique backdrop for academic and social growth, it is nationally recognized for engaged and active learning. Florida Southern College is offering educational programs in numerous fields of study, that include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
The campus of Florida Southern College, comprising 64 buildings spread on 100 acres (405,000 m²), is located in a beautiful area, on the north shore of Lake Hollinsworth where the students have the required environment to live and learn. The Princeton Review’s “Most Beautiful Campus” has classified the college's campus on the ninth place in the 2011 edition of its annual college guidebook.
Florida Southern College's athletic teams are called the Moccasins, often shortened to Mocs, who compete in NCAA Division II, in several sports, for both men and women, sports like Golf, Baseball, Golf, Basketball and Softball. Their official colors are scarlet and white.
